Writing a WhatsApp business description that does its job
The business description is the first thing someone reads when they tap your profile, usually right after receiving a message from a number they do not recognise. It has one job: confirm you are who you claim to be.

What the field is for
People check the profile when they are unsure. A description that reads like an advert increases the doubt; one that plainly states what the business does and where it is removes it.
Say the category, the service area, and the one thing that distinguishes you. Skip the adjectives.
- Family-run dental clinic in Indiranagar, Bengaluru. Open Mon to Sat, 10am to 8pm.
- Handmade silver jewellery, shipped across India. Custom orders welcome.
- Interior design studio for small apartments. Bengaluru and Mysuru.
The rest of the profile matters more than the description
The description is one field among several, and the others carry more trust weight: a display name that matches your signage, a real address, a working website link, and accurate hours.
Hours especially. A profile that says open while nobody answers does more damage than leaving it blank, because it converts a neutral impression into a broken promise.

Group descriptions are a different thing
A group description is read by members, not prospects, so it should be operational rather than promotional: what gets posted here, how often, and what belongs elsewhere.
Stating what does not belong in the group is usually more useful than stating what does.
- Saturday Runners. Route and timing posted every Friday evening. Runs only, please.
- Batch 2026 Parents. Fee reminders and exam dates. Personal queries to the office number.
Frequently asked questions
How long can the description be?
Long enough for two or three sentences, and shorter is better. Most people read the first line and stop.
Can I put a link in it?
There is a separate website field, which is the right place. Links in the description body are not tappable in the same way.
Does the description affect search?
Not meaningfully for Google. It affects whether the person looking at your profile decides you are legitimate, which is the more valuable outcome.
